Golden-Accented Glamour: A Sumptuous Suit Bedecked in Sparkling Emerald and Crimson

Scientifically known as Pharomachrus auriceps, the golden-headed quetzal measures between 13 to 14.2 inches (33 – 36 cm) in length, including its majestic tail feathers. Its wingspan spans from 12 to 14.2 inches (30 – 36 cm), while its weight varies from 5.4 to 6.4 ounces (154 – 182 g). The adult male of this species displays iridescent green plumage with a striking golden sheen upon its head, contrasting elegantly with its fiery red belly and complemented by its bright yellow bill.

Females of the species are distinguished by their dusky heads, dark bills, and subtle gray flecks adorning their breasts. Both genders share a common black underside on their tails, creating a harmonious blend of colors that dazzles the beholder.

This avian spectacle thrives in the lush realms of moist mid-elevation forests, claiming its territory from eastern Panama to northern Bolivia. The golden-headed quetzal finds its preferred residence in the embrace of humid highland woodlands, where its vibrant colors seamlessly merge with the verdant surroundings.

As omnivores, the golden-headed quetzals indulge in a diverse diet that includes fruit, insects, and frogs. However, their gastronomic preference often tilts toward avocados and the fruit of the laurel tree.

During the breeding season, a romantic dance unfolds as these birds lay 1 to 2 eggs, tenderly incubating them for a span of 18 days. Both the male and female share the duties of nest incubation, embodying the essence of partnership. After hatching, the devotion continues as the parents alternate in feeding the chicks, who fledge the nest approximately 20 days after hatching, ready to embark on their own journeys.

The golden-headed quetzal’s range encompasses vast expanses, preventing it from approaching the thresholds for vulnerability under the range size criteria established by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).
