This medium-sized hummingbird can be found in mountain forests and cloud forests at elevations between 1,500 and 4,000 meters (4,900 and 13,100 feet) above sea level. It primarily feeds on nectar from flowers, but also takes insects and spiders as a source of protein.
Despite its beauty, the Collared Inca is not widely known outside of its range in countries such as Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. While it is considered to be a species of least concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), it is still vulnerable to habitat loss and climate change, like many other hummingbird species.
